Day 20...Hong Kong

I just want to start this post with a HUGE thank you to Senator Roger Wicker, his wife, and Kim Chamberlin who works in his office. They have worked tirelessly over the weekend and early this week to help not only our family but the Smith family and ultimately ALL of the 2000+ people who were delayed because of the visa slow down Friday. Not only did they make calls, and no telling what else to help get our visas issued Monday morning, they also went to bat for our families with United airlines and managed to get all of our change flight fees completely dropped. Including Phil and Niki Smith's 4000.00 fees! We were all SO EXCITED!!! There are not words adequate to explain what this has meant to us here, and to our friends and families at home, and I hope that all of you will take a moment to say a prayer for these people, and if you feel so moved to send them a quick personal thanks!

I don't feel super great so I'm going to make this a quick post tonight. We've made it to Hong Kong, (as I'm sure you guessed by the title!) We got through the border with no problems, and even though they took our temperatures with what looked like a ray gun, we truly had no hassle at all with the crossing. We went over the harbor via two beautiful bridges, though you who know me well, know that was NOT my favorite part :) Once we made it to the hotel, we got checked in, battled it out with United for seats together on our flights, and then went down for dinner.

Greg grossed me out by eating RAW shrimp with antennae as long as Annabella's arms, and sliced octopus. I had noodle soup prepared to order with bok choy, shrimp, dried shallot, and garlic, and Annabella had her usual fried rice. We actually managed to mash some shrimp up enough that she ate it with the rice, so she FINALLY got some protein. Well, unless God has other plans, we are set to board our flight out tomorrow around 11 AM, and since we have to grab breakfast before the airport shuttle arrives at 8:40, I'm off to bed. We took a lot of pictures on the drive from Guangzhou to Hong King, and I promise to do my best to upload those as soon as I can.

Please be in prayer for us as we take that long flight home, and for our family as we finally unite with our boys, and become a true family of 6! Pray also for us that God will continue to work in our lives, and will lead us down His path without any trepidation! We already know that He is not done with His plans for us, and can't wait to see what else He has in store for our family!

Day 19....Visa Day!

It has been a long time coming, but this morning at 10:35 our rep arrived back at our hotel with all four children's visas in hand. All were completely correct, and we were ecstatic! Two families hurriedly got ready, and finalized their packing and boarded a van for Hong Kong. One will be flying out tomorrow, the other will be on the same flight as us Wednesday morning. We opted to stay here the extra day for two reasons. One, things are much more expensive in Hong Kong, and two, if there had been another problem with our visa, we REALLY would have been up the creek in having to make new hotel and flight arrangements twice in one week!

So our plan is this. Today we finally made it to the toy plaza shopping, and afterwards we came back to the hotel to pack. We will sleep hopefully until around 8:00 tomorrow, then get up and head to breakfast. After breakfast we will finalize the packing and head over to either the toy market, pearl market, or the island to look around until around 11. We will head back here to get Annabella down for a nap, and get her up just before 2 when our van to Hong Kong will arrive.

At 2 we will board our van, and head to the border of China, and will enter Hong Kong. After entry we will go straight to the Sky City Marriott, and most likely after check in just eat dinner in the hotel. I doubt we will venture out, rather choose to stay in and hopefully get a decent night's sleep. We will board our flight the next morning that is scheduled to take off at 11:15 (I think!) And then we will be on our way back to the US where our daughter will finally acquire her official US citizenship in Chicago when she steps off the plane. We will have a 4.5 hour layover if all our flights are on time, and then we will head to Memphis and finally be able to introduce Annabella to her brothers and Grandparents, and any other friends and family who would like to meet us.

It is so hard to think that the end is almost here of this part of our journey. Many people assume that when we get home, the whole journey has come to an end, but that's not true. You see when we get home, we will just be beginning the next part of  this journey. It is the beginning of our family of six. The beginning of our children meeting, learning one another, and of Annabella's life within a true family unit. It will be a new series of firsts for her. The first time to be in a family, the first time to be in a house, in America, to see pets, to be in a car seat, and to be surrounded with all Caucasian people. She will have to learn how to eat good ole Southern food, and she will have her first opportunity to go outside barefoot in the grass, and to play in the mud.

I can't wait to watch my daughter experience these things, and so much more. Our time here in China has been life changing for us in so many ways, most obviously in getting Annabella, but also in how we perceive things. Life here is indescribable to someone who has never seen it for themselves. It is remarkable how different things are here, for good and for bad. Some things I know I will never share, they are just too deep, too personal, too painful. Others, I have tried to share in as much detail as I could muster through the depths of sleep deprivation.

I will actually miss some things about being here, and I have a feeling that once we get home, I will actually long for some of the times we've had here in China. I already miss the friends we've made who have departed for home, and I will dearly miss the rest whom we will still be able to see in the next two days. Life here is less hectic, even in an adoption, and I like that about the Chinese. The people here as a whole are friendly and kind. The food is really quite good, and I will never be able to experience some of it again, unless God brings me back to China.  I don't know what the future holds, but I am grateful for all that God has planned for our lives that has brought us to right now!

"Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness." Psalm 115:1 NLT

Day 18...Guang Zhou

Tonight I've been reflecting on the past month.

July 1st I watched one of my dearest friends drive out of my driveway and off to her home for the very last night before she moved to the coast. July 2nd our TA came, and that began the crazy whirlwind of getting plane tickets, bags packed, and lists made of appointments and chores for my parents to keep while we were away. On July 5th we were in the ER with Greg, uncertain of what the next few days would hold. July 11th we took off at 6 AM from Memphis beginning our near 24 hours of straight travel to China.

We landed here July 12th, and began to immerse ourselves in a culture so incredibly vibrant, and full, and different from our own. We met and began to bond with other families, and began learning of their stories and journeys that led them to China. The next few days we saw sights that we've only ever seen in history books, and on T.V. Amazing things, with so much history, you could almost feel the stories being whispered from the walls of Tienanmen square, the forbidden city, and the great wall.

We boarded our first flight in China on July 14th and flew to what seemed to be a different nation. Zheng Zhou was so very different from Beijing, it was a real shock to us all. The level of poverty in the cities outside the major areas here in unbelievable. Just two days later we woke up early and headed to the stark plain office where we met our children for the very first time. Each story was a little different, but on the whole, all of the kids did well, and all of the parents did too!

A short ride later and we were back to the hotel, where we finally had time alone with our kids, to bathe, feed, and truly meet them. The next day we traveled to see the room and orphanage that our daughter had lived all but 10 days of her life in. I still haven't been able to go back and read what I wrote those first few days, and the emotion just writing this brings is overwhelming. I literally have tears in my eyes as I type.  The next few days were difficult to say the least, as we felt out Annabella, and she felt us out. It seems as if we've had her forever now, and we all feel so natural together, but it wasn't that way at first.

July 21st we flew to Guang Zhou for what we thought was our last week in China. Getting here felt like we'd stepped into a piece of paradise compared to Zheng Zhou, and we were all excited and relieved to be in a different location. The next few days all of our children seemed to really come out of their shells and blossom into more vivacious little beings, and we all bonded with them, and with each other even more. It was great to be reunited with the friends who had adopted from different provinces who we'd not seen in a week. To meet their children, and hear their stories was such a great experience.

July 26th we all headed to the U.S. consulate's office and took the oath for our children that will allow them to become U.S. citizens when they step foot onto U.S. soil. We all began to pack and prepare as several families planned to leave the next day. On Friday July 27th we got the news that only 2 families would be heading home on time, and the rest of us began our frantic scurry to rebook flights, cancel rooms, vans, and call home to our families to let them know what was going on.

The next day I think we were all still in shock and few of us ventured outside of the hotel. We gathered and prayed, and tried to console one another. Today, July 29th, we got up, had breakfast, and headed to a Christian church to attend a mandarin/English service. To be able to worship here was something we didn't think would be possible, and to have been able to experience it was truly something we will never forget. Hopefully tomorrow we will all receive our visas, but only God knows what is ahead of us.

Tonight as we sat in the hotel room on the floor on a towel and ate Chinese take out from the Cantonese restaurant downstairs, I realized something. This precious little girl is ours, truly ours, forever and ever, ours. This little girl that we affectionately call "Stinky tofu" and "sticky rice," who loves a bath, hates to shop, loves to dance to music, and refuses to eat colored food. This is our daughter. I would do anything for this child. She is no longer just the little girl we are adopting, she is truly my daughter. I think every parent realizes that moment when you just KNOW that you would give anything, and do anything for your child. That moment when you know if anyone very tried to hurt them that you would do anything to keep them safe. Tonight was that time, and that moment for me.

As we sat there sharing fried rice, shrimp, and noodles, she would turn to each of us and smile that nose crinkling, eye squinting smile. She sat between us with her little legs stretched out so she could touch both of us with her tiny little toes. I love this sweet and precious little baby with my whole heart. I love her as much as I could ever love a child, and I know that she is as much mine as my three biological boys. I can not believe that it has been just one short month according to a calender, and that we have gone through so much change in that amount of time. It seems as if it's been so much longer. I am humbled at how much God has blessed me in His plan of allowing me to be this perfect little girls Mom.

I sit here in awe and wonder of what I ever could have done to deserve this blessing, and the grace of God. I am so unworthy of the love that He shows me, and though our daily trials may seem huge to us at the time, I know that to God they are less than tiny specks of dust in His great, grand plan for our lives. If you don't know Christ, I pray that you will one day understand unconditional love, and the grace, and mercy that only He can show you. The life changing love that you can only find in Christ is my true prayer for your life. So tonight, please pray for us, and I also ask that you include someone in your life that hasn't yet found that love and mercy of God. Pray whole heartedly for them as hard and much as you can, that they will one day find the peace that you have, and that they can only find in Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father, Tonight I come to you in humble thankfulness of all that You have blessed me with. The support that You have given us in our pastor, church, and family and friends has been such a lifeline for us here. I know that You have great plans for us, and I pray that You will help me to follow through in whatever it is that You need me to do. I pray for the friends that I have who have not yet found Your great love. I pray that You will burden them with the Holy Spirit, that You will bring them to You. If I can be used in any way, Lord, I pray that you will open my heart and mind to Your will. I lift up all of the families here, Lord and pray that You will continue to strengthen us in our earthly bodies, in in our faith. Forever in Your Great Name I pray, Amen

Day 17...Guang Zhou

Well, with all the stress of the afternoon and evening no one in our group slept well. Most of us just slept in this morning and then stuck close to the hotel. Our friends Phil and Niki from Rienzi have been hit with a 4000.00+ flight change fee, and have been battling it out with United airlines all day to see what can be done to reduce the extra cost. The other families have all been charged roughly 250.00 to 350.00 per ticket to change flights. Most of us are going on faith that we will be able to fly home Tuesday or Wednesday.  We will all additionally incur 121.00 per night for our hotel rooms, and the cost of food, diapers, laundry services, taxis, etc for our extended stay.

We gathered this afternoon in Phil and Niki's room and prayed together for our group and especially for Phil and Niki who are here with their two biological children in addition to their adopted daughter. We know that God has big plans for us, or He wouldn't have kept us here, but right now we are all so tired and ready to be home, that this is trying the very foundations of our faith. Please be in prayer for all of us to keep God's will in our sights, and have complete faith in His timing for us all. In addition to those in our group, tonight we also learned of another woman who is here with one of her children and her two newly adopted daughters with Down Syndrome. Being cooped up in a small hotel room with these children is very difficult at the best of times, and when several are sick, or in need of medical attention in the States, it makes it even harder.

We are doing our best to support one another, and to pray for one another and with one another as we continue to face the unknown time constraints of getting our adopted children's visas processed. In my last post found here,    we asked our faithful friends and family to call or email your state reps, and senators, and anyone else you can think of who might be able to help expedite our visas here Monday. We are required to stay for 24 hours after issuance, so if our visas are not issued by Tuesday, we will have to again change our flights, incurring more costs. We ask you to please look at that post for more detailed information on how you can help us by simply copying and emailing or facebooking it on our behalf.

Since there is nothing more we can do, we just hung out here today, sleeping in and heading down to the pool this evening. Annabella had a super day, and we were able to get some pretty great pictures of her. Greg is really getting good with the camera, and I only wish I could get as good as he so I could capture the detail when I take pictures of Annabella and him as he does of us. We have an AMAZING pool here, and though it was a bit cool since we've had all the rain, it was still quite comfortable, and we had a nice time playing in it with Annabella. After the pool, we came back up and she had her very first bubble bath. No pictures of it though as we took a shower while she was in the tub. She was fascinated with the shower, but she didn't really want to get in it. We finally got her to put her tub toy into the shower spray, but she wouldn't touch it with her body.

Before I post the pictures from today, I just want to let you know how much your comments and prayers mean to us. I know I say that in almost every post, but we can honestly feel your support and prayers here, and we couldn't have gotten here, and been able to withstand this much, without your faithful prayers and support. God is faithful to His faithful, and He listens to all of the prayers you have sent up. He has given us more strength than we knew we could possess and has strengthened our faith even more through the trials we've faced. We will never be able to truly thank you enough for your love!

Urgent.... help needed!!!

Please find below a letter that you can copy and paste to your local rep, Senator, or anyone else that might be able to help us here in China. This is not just a problem for us, there is a family from Florida, a family from Colorado, and another Mississippi family who have been affected, and that is just the CCAI group. Undoubtedly there are other agencies, and individuals who were affected by this Friday as well. Please take a moment to send this to anyone you believe may be willing to put in a call, or email on our behalf! You will just need to edit out the sir/madame, for whichever is appropriate, and put your name at the bottom. For MS families, there is a link directly below the letter to all reps and Senate members for your districts. They told us the more people who will go to bat for us, the more likely we are to receive our visa's. Thanks and God Bless!!!

Dear Sir/Madame,

We are writing on behalf of Gregory and Barbara Bennett and their daughter, Dang, Jia Ran. They have traveled to China to adopt her, and have been held up by the US consulate's office, which was unable to issue their daughter's visa due to a slow computer printer. This delay has been very costly for them, and they have been told that a date can not be guaranteed for receipt of the visa. Without this, they are unable to travel back home to the US. We are asking that you will intervene on their behalf in any way that you can, to urge the consulate's office to expedite their daughter's visa so that they can return home to the rest of their children in the states, and begin their new life together. Any and all help that you can offer this family is greatly appreciated. They are staying in room 1409 of the China Hotel, phone number 86-20-8666-6888. You can also call the US consulate's adoption division directly in Guangzhou, China at 86-20-8518-7653. Thank you for your prompt assistance in this matter, Sincerely,
